Abstract:
This
seminar presents practical design guidelines for four types of series-combined
transformer (SCT)-based Doherty combiners to maximize bandwidth (BW). These
four types are formed by two combinations of SCT models, SCT with independent
inverter and SCT partly absorbing inverter, together with four capacitor
configurations. Using non-ideal transformer-based circuit models, we
systematically derive and validate closed-form design equations for both
symmetrical and asymmetrical SCTs. To estimate the maximum achievable BW and
identify the key design factors, four design examples of each type were
compared using circuit simulations and numerical analysis. It is shown that
higher magnetic coupling leads to larger fractional BW, and distinct “sweet
spots” for the four types when maximizing BW depend on 2–3 variables, such as
turn ratios and/or self-inductances. Finally, SCT sizes are compared, and a
design example with layout-based full-EM simulation achieves near-theoretical
BW. Simulations of four SCT-based Doherty power amplifiers further confirm the
effectiveness of the proposed design methodology.
